My stencil.
Overall, through this class I have discovered that Graphic Design is not for me. I earned an associate's of applied science in Computer Information Systems with an emphasis in Web Management/ Web Master from MHCC and I thought that Graphic Design would be close enough to Web Design. I quickly discovered that it is not, and I hate it! I applied to Art Institute of Portland for their Web Design and Interactive Media program and will be attending next term! I'm excited and feel I have found the right place for me. I am glad I found this out in only one term than waiting for a while.

Poem drawing

Here is my poem drawing that I said I would scan. I guess it doesn't work for the book apparently? Because it's too literal? I think that's okay considering a lot of the art I saw really didn't even have anything to do with the poem. So I will continue to work on it until it's complete.

Update

I'm sorry I haven't updated anything. I have been sick and missed two classes. I feel that these were important classes because there are new developments on the book we are making. I do not quite understand these new developments.

From what I have gathered, is it still correct we are doing 7x9, black and white, unlimited art pieces based on how we interpret the poem by oscar wilde?...in any medium we want?

I hope this is still correct because I spend a large amount of time while being sick, working on something, which I drew by hand...no computers involved. However I am considering scanning it in and making it digital art. I am also going to add a few lines from the poem to it as well... Does that work?

At the same time it is still missing something though. I feel like there's a bit too much white space, bit it is a start.

I will scan it tomorrow.

Week 3, day 2 -- three compositions.

Again, we have another try at compositions with type incorporated.

Much better than last class. I tried to add more color (which I believe was part of the assignment), but sometimes I think simpler is better. I'm not sure which is my favorite. I like all of them in different ways.

week 3, day 1 -- three compositions

This time we neede to incorporate type into our comps. However, we are looking at type as shape/space...not the meaning of the type itself.
The first one, I had a picture of a martini glass stuck in my head from another class assignment so I needed to get it out of my system.
The second one is aweful as a composition. It was mostly playing around with text to see what I could do.
The third one looks pretty good as a composition.
Overall I wasn't very satisfied with this class' assignment.

week 2, day 2--three compositions

Three compositions with three colors. I really disliked my compositions last time. This time, I like them! My made them stand out much more with beautiful colors. And it came very easy to me. I actually finished them all within one night rather than over a couple days.
I used photoshop again for all three of them. I love curly-cues so I decided to do a comp with them. I drew them out using paintbrush tool..and they turned out slightly wobbly so I zoomed in and smoothed them out the best I could. I used layers to add some dimension to it.
The second one is my least favorite, because it is an obvious piece. But I still say it is better than last class.
The third is my favorite. However, I'm not sure if the way I placed everything was very pleasing. I started by using the circle tool and then it reminded me of a lime. I placed a "cut out" filter on it after adding detail.

week 2, day 1 -- three compositions

Last week we did only black and white. This class we are doing black and white and one color of choice. Here are my three compositions with one color. I tool more time doing these because I drew a large blank again...sigh!!!

The first one I took forever on and changed it over and over until it became something simple. It looks like there are several different colors, however the one color I used is the dark red color...the rest of the colors are the same color with a different opacity...and appear lighter on top of the white background.

The second one I actually had fun with. It looks very silly and not all that fantastic but it was fun. I drew shapes and they turned into an alien slug and alien fish staring at each other. Then I drew little creatures with heads wiggling around them. The color is a dark purple-grey.

The last picture didn't take me very long. I concentrated more on using up space in the composition. I put more of the weight at the bottom which I thought we had gone over in class.

clitique on week one, day two

We posted up our three compositions in class and everyone gave it a critique based on the space used within the compositions. My first one was voted least successful, although it was my favorite. And my last one was too much of an object. So my second composition, the "leaf" was the most successful.

We discussed more on where the eye likes to fall within a composition, which I understood slightly but not completely. I will find out more after we critique our next batch of compositions.

week 1, day 2 -- three compositions.

Here are my three "abstract" compositions. They had to be 8.5x11 and only in black and white. However on my second piece, there are different values inbetween black and white. I hope that is ok?

I am feeling frustrated because I don't think I am good at abstract art. I feel like I am a good artist, but when it comes to making up random images that aren't any specific thing, I draw a blank. I would, however, like to learn how to make it easier for me to create abstract art.

I guess I feel like a good artist....but not creative at the same time. My mind goes blank and I can't think of where to begin on a blank piece of paper. Does that make sense? I need to build on my creativity!!

Since I am more of a "computer" person and my goal is to be a Web designer/graphic artist, I did my art in Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop is also starting to frustrate me too because I couldn't do a lot of the things I wanted to do. I have never used Illustrator before, but I got a glimpse of it in ART120 and it looks awesome! I will get to learn how to use it soon...but I would also like to come up with the money to buy the program for my computer at home.
